Salam,
We thank you for signing the petition for fair voting rights for overseas Pakistanis. The signing of the petition has helped further the cause, as you can see below.
Following are the updates since you have signed the petition.
Text of your petition has been printed and distributed to the members of the Senate Standing Committee for Parliamentary Affairs, hence making it an official part of the proceedings. We understand the Chairman informed the committee members that he has received 300 messages from overseas Pakistanis.
A paper advocating for overseas voting rights has been published by one of our volunteers. It has been presented to the President of PILDAT and his team. They felt the points in the paper were fair.
The same paper has been shared with the Chairman of the Standing Committee looking at the bill, Senator Taj Haider.
The Chairman of the Committee, Senator Taj Haider, has also distributed the paper to the Senators members of the committee. So it is now part of the committee’s official record.
The Senator was generous with his time and gave one of our volunteers to present the paper to him in a one to one meeting. You can listen to the recording on this youtube video on our channel.
Outreach activity is also happening in parallel. The team has also shared Overseas Voting Concerns (Refresher) with the Chief Election Commissioner, Election Commission and Secretary and Ministry of Law Parliamentary Secretary.
You can read the discussions of the past two senate standing committee meetings here and here.
Next Steps:
The bill will continue to be discussed in the upcoming Senate Meetings. You can continue to subscribe to this newsletter to get upcoming updates.
We will approach the Speaker of the National Assembly and Election Commission to give us some time to present our one to one. If you can facilitate these conversations, please send us a message on Twitter or reply to this email.
We are also planning to launch a petition to send emails to Prime Minister Imran Khan and his Cabinet Members in the coming days. The petition will ask the PM to appoint a focal person to address overseas voters’ concerns. Would you support the petition?
